The Denver Broncos have been active in the early hours of free agency, making key moves to retain and acquire talent. However, the team took a hit on Monday with the loss of starting linebacker Cody Barton, who has signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Tennessee Titans, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Broncos’ Free Agency Recap So Far

Denver has been focused on keeping its core intact, re-signing four of its own free agents. Additionally, the team made a splash by signing San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga. The Broncos are also reportedly in discussions to bring in Niners linebacker Dre Greenlaw, a move that has become even more crucial following Barton’s departure.

Barton’s Impact in Denver

Barton joined the Broncos last offseason on a one-year deal, stepping in to replace Josey Jewell in the starting lineup. When Alex Singleton suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 3, Barton took on a larger leadership role within the defense, helping mentor linebacker Justin Strnad along the way.

In his lone season with the Broncos, Barton proved his value, starting 14 games and recording 106 tackles (53 solo), 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and two interceptions. He also added a defensive touchdown in a Week 7 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. This marked his third consecutive season surpassing 100 tackles, a testament to his consistency and reliability.

What’s Next for the Broncos?

While Barton’s departure is a setback, Denver appeared unwilling to match Tennessee’s $21 million offer. Now, the team must prioritize filling the void at linebacker, whether by finalizing a deal with Greenlaw or exploring other veteran options in free agency. The upcoming NFL Draft also presents an opportunity to add young talent to the linebacker corps.

With roster holes still to be addressed, the Broncos’ front office remains busy. Will they secure Greenlaw or find another proven veteran to pair with Singleton? Stay tuned as free agency continues to unfold.
