The Los Angeles Lakers have yet to part ways with center Alex Len, despite his struggles since joining the team on February 11. While Len has had minimal impact on the court, averaging just 0.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.6 minutes per game across five appearances, the Lakers remain reluctant to waive him.
Reasons Behind the Lakers’ Decision
According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, three primary factors contribute to the Lakers’ hesitation:
- Avoiding Admission of a Mistake – The Lakers may be holding onto Len to avoid acknowledging that signing him was a misstep. Waiving him prematurely could be perceived as an admission of poor roster management.
- Lack of Better Alternatives – At this stage in the season, viable replacements in free agency are scarce. If a high-value option were available, the Lakers might have already moved on from Len.
- A Likely End-of-Season Departure – Buha believes the Lakers will ultimately waive Len but prefer to do so at the end of the season rather than mid-campaign.
Impact of Jaxson Hayes’ Injury
With starting center Jaxson Hayes sidelined due to a right knee injury, Len has had an opportunity to step up but has struggled to make a difference. He started in Monday’s 111-108 loss to the Brooklyn Nets but failed to score in 13 minutes of play.
Roster Moves on the Horizon?
Buha previously reported that the Lakers are expected to waive at least one player—either Len or Cam Reddish—to free up a roster spot for two-way guard Jordan Goodwin. Additionally, if the team decides to convert big man Trey Jamison III’s contract to a standard deal, Len would likely be the odd man out.
With crucial games ahead, the Lakers must decide whether to continue with Len for depth or make a move to optimize their roster. For now, it appears they are opting to wait and assess their options before making a final call.
