Two men square off on the street, engaging in an exciting martial arts technique. One man is victorious, and their worlds fall apart. At best.
A man from Azerbaijan, 25 years old and an MMA enthusiast, got into an argument with Andrey Drachev, a powerlifting and bodybuilding champion from Russia, who was 32 years old. The two agreed to settle it outside of the Galeria Cafe in Khabarovsk over which martial art was better – MMA or powerlifting. Anar Alakh Ziranov is said to be quite tough, as the cafe where he encountered Andrey Drachev has reported many brawls and even some stabbings taking place lately, with security allowing fights to happen.
It was clear, based on security video and cell phone footage, that things between the two went from cloudy to physical. Prior to things getting too physical, there’s video of the pair having an extended conversation. The next thing you see is them handing off their phones, when one of them loses a shoe and has to put it back on before continuing their argument. The fight wasn’t out of nowhere or initiated by just one party; it was mutual combat.
This video below is of the first round of the fight. It starts off with Drachev sitting by the steps and Ziranov (also known as Anar Allakhveranov) gesturing that they should fight. Without warning, Drachev (a silver medalist at the 2011 World Powerlifting Championships in other Czech Republic) launches himself at the much smaller man. However, Ziranov levels him and takes him down before staggering him with many punches and finishing it with a couple of kicks for good measure.
Ming pushes Drachev back, but only briefly, before he comes after him again, and then the fight just ends.
However, things get a lot worse. The second video starts off with the gigantic Drachev removing his shirt while advancing. Ziranov wisely distances himself and attempts to drunkenly spin away from Drachev when the latter taunts him to punch him. He too removes his shirt at this point.
After winning the first round, Ziranov shuffles into a round kick to the face. He then completes a nice double leg takedown and finds himself in top mount against Drachev. With great difficulty, he controls him in side control for a few seconds before Drachev gets on his back briefly in Scarf Hold.
Drachev pins Ziranov from the on top position, with a mighty challenge always an option. As soon as Drachev tries to strike, Ziranov is up again. So the bodybuilder stops and steps back, allowing his opponent time to get properly shod when he sees that Ziranov’s shoe has fallen off.
The two fighters move in again, then break and stop to glare at one another. Ziranov tightens his shoe laces, stands up and the two share a respectful fist bump as they clasp hands. The fight nearly starts up again but Ziranov realizes that his zipper is down. Again Drachev gives him a little space.
Then Ziranov steps into a high left spherical kick to the head; the large is staggered. A second identical kick fails, because the combine nearly move off camera. Ziranov then lands a spinning left hook kick, that sends Drachev to the bottom. As Drachev rises, a football game kick lands, putt him out. His body limp and unconscious, Drachev os impacts the pavement. And as he lies unconscious, Anar lands many a lot of punches to the face, before it’s choppy.
This is security cam footage.
Have you seen a video like this? Two guys take to the street and one of them executes an awesome martial arts technique before ending the battle. The other guy ends up lying on the ground in pain.
The fight over whether MMA works is a stupid one at first glance. It’s amazing to see it in action, though, and actually functioning on a huge national champion in powerlifting and bodybuilding.
There is bad news, according to the deputy doctor in charge at the second regional hospital in Khabarovsk.
“A young man was found without signs of life,” said the doctor. “Immediately he was brought in to ICU, where he received a full range of resuscitation measures for half an hour. Unfortunately, nothing could be done.”
Andrey Drachev died before he reached the hospital.
Criminals attacked the popular athlete/coach, who was just minding his own business, and left him to die.
Mr. Ziranov was eventually captured and arrested, having fled during a massive manhunt. In court, he offered his deepest apologies to the Drachev family for the loss he felt all the more keenly having lost his father in a car accident just days before.
“I want to apologize to Andrey’s family and parents for my actions that caused so much pain,” he said. “I did not want this and did not plan it as the investigators allege. I know what it is like to lose someone close, and I understand how Andrey’s parents must feel.”
Ziranov was sentenced to 18 years in prison after his scrap outside a bar resulted in the destruction of two lives, and two families. There’s no question that you should never cut corners when training with bricks – not only is it unsafe, but doing so can be shockingly dumb. That much is true when people are drunk too. It’s a sad truth, but sometimes they die during these things.
Fighting for money in alleyways for strangers is an insanely stupid idea. If you’re interested in fighting, take that energy to a gym or arena and beat up your friends. Fighting on the street will get you killed and lead to time behind bars.
What Started The Fight?
There were conflicting reports as to who started the fight, but an eyewitness that was in the cafe with the pair said it was Ziranov. The source said that Drachev wrote down his phone number so they could work things out next day when they were sober. Shortly after, Anar reportedly kicked Drachev.
Ziranov’s relatives have offered an alternate story, claiming that the fight was actually started when Ziranov called Drachev a “piglet.” Local reports say Drachev had been involved in another incident prior to this street brawl.
According to respected sports coach Vladimir Mulin, the disagreement between Andrei Drachev and Vladimir Mulin may have far-reaching roots. Vladimir was an elementary school friend of Andrei’s, and they wrestled together while they were both in school. Once Andrei suffered a knee injury, he started powerlifting. Then later when he suffered another serious knee injury, he switched to bodybuilding to help repair his ripped muscle fibers.
The man, who was reportedly 6“4 and 265 lb. at the time of his death, lost a fight to someone who was just 5 fl”7 and 160 lb. Given that this seems like a fair match to me, 18 years in jail seems wrong given that there is no indication that murder was intended. To the contrary, the pair seemed to get on well together, all things considered. Still, a man died when those trained hands were involved.
Does Ziranov do Mixed Martial Arts?
Ziranov has been identified as a MMA fighter and coach. Images from his VK profile indicate he was a big fan of Mike Tyson, and now-deceased Azerbaijani organized crime figure Rovshan Janiev, and show him training and coaching at a fight gym in Khabarovsk called Master. His background is believed to be kickboxing and Sambo.
Ziranov’s address was given at the Master Gym address by police, who were investigating crimes committed there. There are many reports of criminals associated with the Master Gym, including Roman Kovalev and Evgeny Rufanov, one of its founders. In 2015, a couple was convicted of intentional infliction of grave harm to health. They had reportedly beaten a man who owed them money, causing a craniocerebral injury.
A top executive in the Far Eastern Federation of Modern Pankration debunked much of what Sofiya Vasilyeva said about her ex. Dmitry Konkov, head of the Far Eastern Federation of Modern Pankration disputed that Ziranov was a combat fighter because they had never heard of him. However, they have screened his combat sports records and found he’s really good at martial arts. They’ve also never heard of Vasilyeva.
Now man has wasted his own life, and the life of another.
Did anyone else get arrested?
A security guard nearby saw the two people fighting, and called the police. They arrived but did not stop the fight.
The prosecutor’s office accuses the officers of focusing on violence happening near the police car instead of taking any measures to detain or provide emergency medical assistance to one already covered in blood. His external condition clearly indicated the need for emergency hospitalization.
The officers returned to the police station and reported that they could not find anything.
One officer sentence to three years and three months in a penal colony settlement and the other officer who goes free banes from working in law enforcement for two years and eight months.
Without a proper understanding of the importance of training and fighting in a controlled environment, young athletes with promising careers be ruines by serious injuries. It’s important to punch friends only when they’re wearing headgear and you’re on a padded surface- so don’t ruin your future.
