A decade ago, Adam and Beth Copeland were retired from wrestling. Now they’re teaming up for a match together at the ‘Royal Rumble.’
“Mentally, I feel like I’m in a way better place in terms of telling stories than I was when I had to retire”
Adam “Edge” Copeland
Edge returned to wrestling two years ago during the Royal Rumble, creating an unforgettable moment when he was an unexpected entrant, and later attacked Karl Anderson.
The year before, Edge went the distance in the Rumble match, which gave Adam Copeland a chance to show that he can still be competitive with the best athletes in WWE. He’ll join forces with Beth Phoenix, his spouse, in the coming year. In the tag match with The Miz and Maryse in a game that he had never imagined, Beth Phoenix could happen.
We never thought this would be a possibility, Copeland states. “I had to take a break in the year 2011. Then, a year later, Beth quit. We had children. The thought of returning to the sport of wrestling was never on the agenda my mind, much less to come back to be asked, “What would you think of joining forces over a month?
“We’re having lots of fun. Flying together, riding together, flying. This is the only aspect of the job that’s difficult at times however, when you’ve got your best friend right next to you, it’s much more enjoyable.”
The storyline is plausible, considering that Edge was first beaten out in the first episode by The Miz along with Maryse. The result was being the first to return on “The Glamazon” at the Day 1 pay-per-view earlier this month, which sunk the sidelines. Each moment that Phoenix is on the screen, Copeland has an evident joy and excitement. The camera captured the moment in January. 3 issue of Raw and featured the appearance of a Rockwellian image that captured how the couple loves each other.
That was my attempt to get Beth to be Beth Copeland and not worry about being Beth Phoenix, Copeland declares. Let the shoulders go and enjoy yourself. We just wanted to get out and just be ourselves.
This version of Edge is the closest thing to Adam yet. If we venture out and try to portray an angry, tough couple, there’s only a certain amount of us. If you see us having fun, that’s what we’re doing. The audience can sense that and hopefully, it keeps the show from ever becoming snarky. It should be fun for the viewers, too.
After spending the last three years on NXT’s broadcast team, Phoenix has been promoted to the NXT Broadcast team. Phoenix is now a step further up in her profile with remarkable confidence in the microphone in the last few weeks, a chance she never had when she was in her ring.
I’m loving that Beth is getting a chance to show she can talk, Copeland states. Over the decades, her character was always tough and always ready to smash things. It’s not gone completely however, what’s really great about her character is that she’s been capable of showing that, when you hold an instrument in her hands she can do it particularly after having done commentary over the last three years. Personally, I think it was all triggered by she gave her Hall of Fame speech. This opened many eyes. This led to a lot of commentary and ultimately to this. For me, this is the best part of it all; we get to watch her move her muscles and spread her wings. We also get to perform this feat with her.
A single of the most engaging performers on the mic The Edge promos remain impressive. His Edge character has grown substantially over the last two decades, and he is continuing to develop new ways to engage the viewers. A couple of months ago, when the AEW‘s CM Punk was slammed by MJF with Dynamite as a poor impersonation of The Miz and the reaction the next day on Raw from Edge beautifully portrayed the way Miz is “rent-free” in people’s headspace. When asked the process he uses to create his promotional videos, Copeland notes there are numerous nuances and the notes he takes on his iPhone.
I’m always looking in every direction for kernels of ideas, Copeland declares. Whether it’s listening to something, looking at something, or reading something I’m always on the watch for. I take that seed of an idea and transform it into my own, then relate the idea with Seth Rollins. Or Roman Reigns. Or The Miz or AJ Styles. I’m always looking for this stuff. My notes on my phone are just promotional lines. You can scroll on for quite a while. If I come up with something concerning Kevin Owens, I log immediately even if I’m not engaged in something.
Edge has put together a highlight reel following his return, but Edge hasn’t yet had the honor of being WWE champion. In a life in which Edge has accomplished each important task (sometimes at multiple times), Copeland isn’t sure whether Edge requires a second title run.
I can’t say that Edge needs it, Copeland states. When I think about the character, and then I take a look at what I have accomplished through this character. What could another word refer to? I’m not sure. Does it sound like a fascinating and uplifting story? The man who was the subject of it was ripped away from him and is now trying to get it back. It’s got a bit of an uplifting, Rocky vibe to it. If it doesn’t happen the way you want it to, it won’t happen.
I returned to do it again. Are my storylines compelling? Are they appealing enough to people to watch them? Do I compete at the same level or even better than before? That’s my goal. In my mind, I believe that I’m at a higher situation in regards to telling stories than when I had to leave. It’s all that is important to me: how good is the match, and how great do the tales.
Copeland’s primary focus is Saturday’s tag game at the Rumble, and he is hoping to make the most of his first encounter with his wife.
It’s so unexpected, Copeland declares. I did not know it could occur, and we’re having an absolute blast. It’s evident. Two of our opponents are Mike as well as Maryse who are totally dedicated to being heelers. It makes everything simple. I’m excited for the Rumble. The Rumble will be a blast.
