On July 11, Ali Gürbüz won the blue belt at the ancient 660th Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival after defeating his opponent İsmail Koç in Turkey’s northwestern province of Edirne with a movie called “Göz Pala”
Gürbüz has won the title of Başpehlivan for the second time in a row, and he has also achieved it four times in total.
In the ancient sport of oil wrestling, a contender in leather pants is matched with another contender and they tackle each other until one person gains the victory. The event was finally added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010 thanks to Turkey.
