Davis defends his world lightweight title, stopping Romero in front of a record-breaking crowd at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on SHOWTIME pay-per-view.
Before their fight, Tank and Rolly stared each other down in the stands of Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. There was edge-of-your-seat energy between the two fighters that showed clearly in the night’s pugilists.
Davis patiently waited and waited in round after round before making a decisive attack, disconnecting Rolly in the sixth round and becoming WBA light-welterweight champion. The result was an 18,970 record-breaking attendance in Barclays Center.
“I want to thank God, first for this victory, second, I want to thank Al Haymon, Mayweather Promotions, SHOWTIME, we did it again in New York City baby,” Davis said. “Thank you, New York City. I won my first belt here and it was great to come back to New York City and do it again.
As much as he wanted to be confident, he admitted to gratitude for Rolly’s team and wishing him well. Their argument was settled like men in the ring.
“I knew it was all about selling the fight” is what the fighter said, and he was glad they didn’t fight first time as he was so emotional. But he is just grateful to be in this position and to come out with the win.
Romero started jabbing with his left hand, while Davis stoically waited. With 1:53 left in the round, Davis succeeded in landing a token left to Romero’s face, but there was nothing behind it.
In the second round, Romero landed a left to Davis’ jaw while Tank, who was angered by Romero’s previous hit, retaliated with a straight left to the face.
The boxer admits that once it got a little more heated, he wasn’t really fighting the same person; this was someone different. He was an opponent but he needed to loosen him up a little first.
Romero hit his opponent with a left hook and followed it up with a right to the head. Davis hit Romero with a left to the head in response.
By the fourth round, Romero continued to be the stalker and had landed a straight right on Davis. With 1:08 left in the round he then hit Davis with a straight right of his own who did not appear to be backing up as effectively. In the fifth round, Davis stopped giving ground and was creeping up on Romero without giving him any space. At 2:00 left in the fifth, it looked like Davis may have hurt his left hand after he dropped it suddenly and seemed to curse. In the sixth round, Romero came forward but looked too aggressive when throwing a right that missed while Davis sidestepped him.
