Gunther is one of the most powerful wrestlers in WWE right now. As the Intercontinental Champion, he is making a lot of noise, and it looks like he wants to do something big at WrestleMania 40.
Last year, The Ring General became the Intercontinental Champion for the first time on Friday Night SmackDown. This was the start of his famous rule. When Gunther became WWE champion, he brought back the title’s status by putting on a number of great matches. He is very close to breaking The Honky Tonk Man’s record for the longest time with the gold.
The 35-year-old star talked to Steve Fall about the possibility of being the major event at WrestleMania 40 as the Intercontinental Champion.
“Who knows? If I get the chance of being in the Royal Rumble as the Intercontinental Champion, maybe. Yeah, I think going into that, I would be a favorite, so that would lead to WrestleMania [40]. So, the chance is there.”

The Ultimate Warrior went into WrestleMania VI in 1990 as the Intercontinental Champion. He beat Hulk Hogan in the main event of the show to win the WWE Championship. Since then, no Intercontinental Champion has been the main event at The Show of Shows.
On WWE RAW, Gunther will try to keep his Intercontinental Title.
Earlier this year, the yearly Draft put The Ring General and Imperium on Monday Night RAW. Since becoming the IC Champion, he has been in fights with several big names, such as Matt Riddle and Drew McIntyre.
Gunther went up against Matt Riddle at Money in the Bank 2023. He beat the rival and kept his title. During the event, Drew McIntyre came back to the company and attacked the winner. At SummerSlam, the two stars got into a fight, but The Scottish Warrior wasn’t able to get rid of the Imperium boss.
Last week, Chad Gable won a match for the number one contender spot. On the next show of Monday Night RAW, he will face The Ring General for the Intercontinental Championship.
