Rocky Romero is a busy man, working with Impact Wrestling, Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro-Wrestling among others.
But that still doesn’t mean he’s too busy to take Tony Khan, the owner of Ring of Honor and professional wrestler, on calls. Romero is happy to hear that Khan just wanted to apologize for making such a large purchase after his acquisition of the company was finalized.
One of the most popular wrestling stars of all time, Shawn Michaels, explained why from a recent visit on AEW Unrestricted.
“The news broke and I was like, ‘Oh shit! Tony’s bought Ring of Honor’,” said Romero. “I then received a text from Tony apologizing a few minutes later, telling me that the deal went through last-minute.
He told me that he had wanted to tell me but couldn’t, as it was too late in the game. The deal went through and he said that he wanted to collaborate with me on ROH and NJPW matches throughout 2018. I said, ‘Wow—that sounds really cool’.
As Khan’s vision of Ring of Honor may entail, Romero compared it to what New Japan has done in America where they grow the organization with a team-style approach and the fan base amplifies accordingly.
“It was very shocking but I’m glad that Tony bought it,” Romero said of WWE shutting down ROH. “I think the library is in good hands with somebody who I think will do a very good job to preserve it and take care of it the right way.
So, I think that seems really important. With talks that are circulating in recent interviews and such on how Tony will bring Ring of Honor back to its roots of focusing on younger wrestlers for AEW in the future or whatever it might be, I think this is going to be a great start with bringing more talent into Ring of Honor as well as preserving the legacy by not only selling out to New Japan Strong but what happened before where there was more focus on talent leaving at ROH in order to join New Japan.
This sounds pretty cool and I think this is what Ring Of Honor always was growing from the first incarnation and then the second iteration and now you can see where everyone is at now. So, I think this will be a temporary continuation of that legacy while future stars make their way into Ring of Honor before joining AEW later or whatever they decide to do next
