Leonardtown, Maryland — State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling said today that a St. Mary’s County jury convicted Jontae Lamont Proctor, 21, of Leonardtown, Maryland, of first-degree murder for his participation in the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old victim.
On February 26, 2024, officers from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of shooting in Lexington Park, Maryland, and discovered an unconscious victim inside a car with a gunshot wound to the head. These injuries eventually claimed the victim’s life.
After a four-day jury trial, a St. Mary’s County jury found Proctor guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to conduct first-degree assault in this homicide.
This conviction is the latest in Proctor’s string of violent acts. While Proctor was awaiting trial in this case, a St. Mary’s County jury convicted him of first-degree assault and using a pistol to commit a violent felony just a month before. That lawsuit resulted from a different incident on March 13, 2024, in which Proctor used a weapon to fire rounds into a property in Lexington Park, Maryland.
State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling stated, “This defendant has repeatedly demonstrated a blatant disregard for human life and the safety of our community.” “St. Mary’s County will not accept this kind of irresponsible lawlessness. These convictions mean that the defendant will no longer be able to intimidate our communities, and our office will continue to aggressively prosecute violent criminals in order to keep our community safe.
Proctor is still imprisoned without bail until both sentence hearings. He faces a potential sentence of LIFE in prison for first-degree murder and a maximum sentence of 70 years in jail for convictions related to his February 2025 first-degree assault jury trial.
Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Alena Mosier and Assistant State’s Attorney Shaye Reynolds prosecuted the case on behalf of St. Mary’s County residents.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office’s Detective Warren Forinash led the investigation.
