Suffering from Alzheimer’s-related dementia, Gagne now resides in the memory loss unit of the Friendship Village Nursing Home in Bloomington, Minnesota. The man who once graced wrestling rings and football fields now faces the cruel reality of memory loss and deteriorating health.
On January 26, an unfortunate and heart-wrenching incident occurred in the nursing home, involving Gagne and another resident, 97-year-old Helmut Gutmann, who also battled Alzheimer’s. Gagne, in what can only be described as a tragic altercation, reportedly slammed Gutmann to the floor, leading to a broken hip and a head injury for the elderly man. Gutmann was subsequently hospitalized and endured treatment for his injuries, only to be hospitalized once more.
Sadly, Helmut Gutmann passed away on February 14 due to complications arising from the injuries sustained during the incident. His life, a tapestry of accomplishments including being a prominent cancer researcher and a talented violinist who had fled Nazi Germany in 1936, was tragically cut short.
The incident has cast a dark shadow over Verne Gagne’s later years. Reports have emerged, revealing that Gagne had been involved in previous altercations within the nursing home, including a distressing episode in which he choked and pushed Gutmann. Ruth Hennig, Gutmann’s daughter, has expressed a complex blend of emotions, acknowledging that Gagne might not be fully responsible for his actions due to his condition. However, she also maintains that her father might still be alive if not for the tragic altercation that transpired within the nursing home’s walls.
In response to this unfortunate situation, Bloomington Police have initiated an investigation into Gutmann’s passing. Although it appears unlikely that Gagne will face legal charges due to his deteriorating mental state, the particulars surrounding the incident remain shrouded in patient privacy practices and the ongoing investigation.
