The two competitions were attended by 100 competitors from 15 different countries.
A total of five medals were won by Qatar on the third day of the Men’s West Asian Weightlifting Championship and the Men’s and Women’s Qatar Weightlifting Cup.
At the Qatar Weightlifting Cup, Noreen Eid won two bronze medals, while Fares Ibrahim won three golds at the West Asian Weightlifting Championship.
Qatari athletes won 12 more medals at the tournaments a day earlier.
For Qatar, Rebeka Ibrahim won six gold medals in the 59kg event, while her colleague Hazem Hassan won three gold medals at the West Asian Weightlifting Championship and three other medals at the weightlifting cup.
Approximately 100 competitors from 15 different countries participated in the two competitions, which began on December 30 and will end on January 4.
Following his victory, Ibrahim set his sights on more medals at the Qatar Cup in 102kg.
West Asian Championships and Qatar Cup are part of the athlete’s preparation for upcoming events, including the Asian Championship in May, the World Championship in September, and the Qatar Cup in December, which determines eligibility for the 2024 Olympics.
Women are participating for the first time in the ongoing tournaments in Qatar this year.
Qatar’s outstanding organization of the two events was praised by Mustafa Saleh, president of the West Asian Weightlifting Federation.
Qatar Weightlifting Federation Board member Ismail Al Qaoud praised the flawless planning and fierce competition at both tournaments.
The Qatari weightlifters put up a fight against athletes with extensive experience despite making their first international appearance, Al Qaoud said in a news release.
