Bruiser Brody, a towering figure in the world of hardcore wrestling, met a tragic end that sent shockwaves through the wrestling community. Standing at 6’8″, Brody was a force to be reckoned with, known for his ferocity, fur-covered boots, and chain-swinging entrance that struck fear into the hearts of fans. However, it was in Puerto Rico, amidst the cheers and the adrenaline of the ring, that the wrestling world lost one of its most beloved stars.

The Early Years: Building a Legacy in the World of Wrestling
Bruiser Brody, born Frank Donald Goodish, began his wrestling journey in the 1970s. His larger-than-life persona and unbridled intensity quickly propelled him into the spotlight. Brody became a sought-after name, captivating audiences with his wild demeanor and unmatched charisma. His journey took him to various promotions, but it was his time in Japan that solidified his status as a hardcore legend.
The Fatal Encounter: A Meeting Turned Deadly

On July 16, 1988, Bruiser Brody was set to wrestle for the World Wrestling Council (WWC), owned by Carlos Colon, in Puerto Rico. Little did he know that this night would mark the end of his legendary journey. José Huertas González, wrestling as Invader 1, approached Brody ahead of the match under the guise of discussing business. González harbored resentment towards Brody, who had previously humiliated him in matches. Their encounter in the showers took a dark turn, with only two screams echoing through the dressing room.
Chaos Unleashed: Witnessing the Unthinkable
The aftermath of the fatal encounter was chaos personified. Tony Atlas, the first to enter the scene, witnessed Brody clutching his stomach and González brandishing a knife. Dutch Mantel, arriving moments later, described a scene of absolute pandemonium. Brody lay on the floor, and the dressing room, once filled with the adrenaline of the upcoming match, now resonated with shock and disbelief.
A Wrestler’s Prayer: Desperation in the Face of Loss

As Brody lay injured, paramedics faced challenges reaching him due to heavy traffic. The wrestling community watched in horror as Tony Atlas, unable to wait for paramedics, physically carried the massive Brody to the ambulance. José González faced murder charges, but justice remained elusive. Claiming self-defense and benefitting from a weak Puerto Rican justice system, González walked away a free man. The trial, lacking representation for Brody, resulted in acquittal, leaving the wrestling world in shock and disbelief. Tony Atlas and Dutch Mantel, key witnesses, were ironically summoned post the trial, exposing the inadequacies of the legal proceedings.
Legacy Stained: The Unhealed Wounds of Wrestling’s Black Day
Bruiser Brody’s legacy endures, but the stain of that fateful night remains. José González continued to wrestle in Puerto Rico, seemingly unaffected by the gravity of his actions. The wrestling world was left to grapple with the unanswered questions and the bitter taste of injustice that still lingers.
The Murder Scene:
“The whole dressing room was chaotic. The first person I saw was Chris Youngblood. I asked him what had happened. He was almost hysterical as he said, ‘José stabbed Brody.” “I still did not know what he meant, but as I looked deeper into the room, I saw Brody lying prone on the floor with several guys surrounding him. I thought that some guy named José had rushed into the room and attacked Brody. Everybody in PR is named José, so I looked at Chris again, and he said, ‘Invader – Invader stabbed Brody.’It was bedlam in the dressing room. Now, everything started to move in slow motion. I remember walking over to where Brody was lying and just staring in disbelief. A doctor is always present in San Juan, and he was crying. Brody was conscious, and as I looked closer, I could see a stab wound about an inch long and deep with air bubbles escaping from it. Much later, the doctor told me that meant that the blade had pierced the lung. Brody was telling promoter Carlos Colon to take care of his family.I didn’t see a lot of blood, but, again, later, I learned that he was hemorrhaging internally. This can’t be happening, I thought to myself. This can’t be real. But real it was. I am not a very religious person, but I eased over in a corner out of everyone’s way and prayed for Bruiser. I then found myself looking through a plexiglass door that led into the shower. The door was kind of translucent plexiglass that distorted images somewhat, but I saw the Invader and Victor Jovica screaming at each other in the shower room. It seemed as though Invader was attempting to leave, and Jovica was trying to stop him.”
