Rey Mysterio, the new WWE United States Champion, talked about how surprising it was to win the title on last night’s Friday Night SmackDown.
Mysterio was able to end Austin Theory’s rule, which had been going on for 258 days since WWE Survivor Series: WarGames in November. Theory was supposed to defend his title against LWO member Santos Escobar, who won the U.S. Title Invitational event to get a shot at the U.S. Champion. After beating Mysterio in the finals, Escobar had won the competition. During that fight, Rey really did hurt himself, so Escobar was given the win.
But after Theory’s brutal attack on Escobar last night, he was not allowed to fight on SmackDown. Rey Mysterio, who worked with Escobar at LWO, was named as the replacement, and he finally won the title. This is his third time as US champion.
The title is a gift to LWO from Rey Mysterio.
Kayla Braxton and Rey Mysterio recently spoke on the SmackDown Lowdown, and the veteran wrestler expressed his delight at capturing the title. He said that it was the name of LWO and that was what brought them together. What he said is as follows:

“Today was a roller coaster ride from the moment I arrived to the moment which is now. I was so angry, and my frustration and my anger took over that when I went out and had that match with Austin, I wasn’t really thinking about the final consequence, which is [being United States Champion]. My team, the LWO, this ain’t my title. This is our title. This is the LWO’s title.
Oh my god, this is our unity right here. This is what unites us together. When you have guys like Austin Theory, which we all run across at some point in our lifetime, you have to put an end to that, and I think tonight was the perfect night to put an end to Austin Theory.”
We’ll have to wait and see what happens with Rey Mysterio’s title run.
