A state of emergency has been officially declared in New York as a massive wildfire continues to spread across parts of Long Island.

The fire ignited on Saturday afternoon in Center Moriches, Suffolk County, and has since rapidly extended to neighboring areas, including East Moriches, Eastport, and Westhampton. The situation has prompted immediate action from state officials as firefighters and emergency responders battle the blaze.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the emergency declaration, mobilizing essential resources to combat the fire and ensure public safety.

“We are deploying resources as quickly as possible, and I have mobilized our agencies, the National Guard, and the State Police to provide both air and ground support to protect Long Islanders,” Governor Hochul stated.

She also emphasized the urgent need for residents to stay alert. “I’ve declared a state of emergency to secure resources immediately. This is an evolving situation, and air quality is a concern—New Yorkers must monitor emergency alerts and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.”

While firefighters have managed to contain some of the flames, other areas continue to burn, posing risks to both residents and the environment.

Multiple agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Conservation, State Parks, and New York State Police, are actively engaged in response efforts to mitigate the damage and provide support.

Authorities continue to monitor the wildfire’s progression and are urging residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, follow evacuation orders if issued, and stay updated on emergency advisories.
