A man named Todd “Toddzilla” Hutchings would not have become a force in the arm wrestling world. Mr. Hutchings was looking for arm wrestling tournaments online in Michigan, one day in 2000, only to chance upon a local arm wrestling event. It was a time when such events did not enjoy the widespread online presence they do today and pullers were just moving out of the garage and beyond word-of-mouth
Hutchings learned a vital lesson at the beginning of his career: muscles and skills will give you victory. Guys need to have a basic level of strength to compete but that won’t get them far on its own, says Hutchings. “You see it all the time,” Hutchings says knowingly. “The big, strong guys get beat by the little guys. A good skill guy can overcome power.” Those skills take time to perfect—the veteran estimates three years—but go ahead and train for endurance instead. Guys need to be able to pull through six or seven matches in order to win some prize money at a tournament (Money earned through sheer grit is what keeps mechanical engineer Hutchings in the game). The WAL will offer hundreds of thousands in payouts this year, so know that if you show up at one of Walleye’s tournaments, you could have your share of winnings! Hutchins has his eye on taking home some cash for himself as well.
