Jake Paul, the social media star-turned-boxer, finally faced a “real boxer” on Sunday, facing Tommy Fury in an eight-round cruiserweight bout. Although Paul fought well, Fury managed to pull out a split decision victory.
First round:
In the first round, Fury showed far more aggression than he had in previous fights, bringing the fight right to Paul, which led to the first clinch.
Talking about the fifth round, the referee deducted a point from Paul. In the sixth round, he deducted a point from Fury. Ultimately, the points were equalized, but it set a strange tone for the second half of the fight.
A big factor in the fight was Fury’s jab, constantly popping Paul in the face and preventing him from staying in range to land the big overhand rights that had dropped many opponents in the past.
With a perfectly timed left hand as Fury stepped forward, Paul knocked Fury off balance just enough to knock him down with a knockdown. Fury was not badly injured by the shot and fought back to the final bell, but the addition of a 10-8 round in favor of Paul added some drama as the official scorecards were read.
The past two years, I dreamed and envisioned winning this fight. No one believed me. Now I can stand up and be noticed. It’s my first main event at 23. I had pressure on my shoulders.
Upset:
It should be noted that Paul entered the bout with a rematch clause in place should Fury pull off what was a small upset in terms of betting odds. After the fight, Paul gave Fury credit, but made it clear that he intended to use it.
A new cruiserweight champion was crowned in the co-main event as Badou Jack defeated Ilunga Junior Makabu by TKO in the 12th round. With this win, Jack was able to win the world title in a third weight division, having previously held championships in super middleweight and light heavyweight. He has now won six straight fights since 2020.
