WWE Backlash is also called WrestleMania Backlash from 2021 onwards. It is a pro-wrestling event produced by WWE. It’s broadcast live through pay-per-view (PPV). It’s only available on streaming services platforms; Peacock, and the WWE Network. The event began in 1999 and was the first PPV to be held monthly. It was held following the end of the initial In Your House shows. Which were PPVs that took place monthly during the promotions “Big Five” PPVs at the time:
- Royal Rumble
- King of the Ring
- Survivor Series.
The initial Backlash was originally promoted as an In Your House show. However, the branding was removed before the event’s launch.
History of WWE Backlash
The concept behind the pay-per-view was inspired by the Backlash generated by WWE’s main annual event, WrestleMania. From the beginning through 2009, Backlash served as the official following WrestleMania PPV, which was always held each year in April and May, except for the 2005 show held in May. Following the 2009 event, Backlash was shut down and replaced with Extreme Rules in 2010.
However, after seven years, it was reintroduced in 2016 and held in September to be the post-SummerSlam PPV. The events of 2017 and 2018 were scheduled for May, but other PPVs took place during the time between WrestleMania and Backlash the two years. A Backlash event was originally planned to take place in June of 2019, but it was canceled and replaced with an event only held once named Stomping Grounds. The Backlash was then reintroduced in 2020 and was scheduled for June. The 2021 event was moved Backlash into May; however, this time, there was no additional show within the period between WrestleMania 37 and Backlash. The event was reintroduced to its original format, and the event was renamed “WrestleMania Backlash.”
