In a traditional British PPV event, the upcoming Clash At The Castle will feature a match between WWE Superstar Roman Reigns and Scotland’s Drew McIntyre. While many fans would have hoped for a different name to dethrone Reigns from his recently vacated WWE Undisputed Universal Championship, it’s time for the change to finally take place in order to benefit WWE’s product.
Roman Reigns Has Had An Incredible Run As WWE Universal Champion
Roman Reigns has been Universal Champion for over 700 days with no signs of stopping. His reign is on par with Hulk Hogan and Bruno Sammartino, making him in the same league as the greats of WWE World Championship history. He also unified the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 38 against Brock Lesnar.
With his reign as WWE champion, Johnny has become the most dominant wrestler in the company and is one of the leading faces of the brand. Every time he speaks, he commands attention and every match feels like a main event clash. He has overcome top opponents such as Edge, John Cena, Braun Strowman, Goldberg, Daniel Bryan, The Miz and many more during his time as the champion. There’s really no clear indicator on who will dethrone him due to how dominant he’s been. That is why Drew McIntyre steps up to do so.
Drew McIntyre Earns A WWE Championship Win In Front Of A Live Crowd
Back in 2019, after he won the Royal Rumble match and wanted to be accomplished enough to hold the WWE Championship win of it, but by 2020’s pandemic, his title reigns didn’t matter because they were without live crowds and the start of the Thunderdome Era.
By then, the damage was too severe that his character was corny and cheesy to any extent of content he had been using so far.
He’s still managed to gather good reactions from the crowd, but his momentum has taken a turn for the worse over the last few months.
He’s been in a slow and steady climb to get back into the main event scene through cliché promos and lacklustre feuds while also earning a multi-match contract at Wrestlemania last year. A lot of this came with Triple H taking an active role in creativity again with new talks on promos now being full of natural and likable content which includes the type of content he used to provide.
McIntyre never performed well in front of his audiences with the exception of a few performances, which is natural given his two years of poor creative. A win in front of a home crowd would fix the damage that had been done especially if this was in his home country as it would be a memorable moment for him.
WWE TV Requires A Full-Time World Champion
With Reigns moving from a full-time, main roster role to a part-time role with SmackDown Live, Raw was struggling to keep the torch lit. The WWE has had a lot of part-timers take over for the world title and fans have seen this in their heads going back to CM Punk and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson taking time away. Even though Reigns is doing well for himself in this new scenario, fans would like to see fewer part-timers dominating the wrestling world on a weekly basis and having championship matches be an important thing on TV every time.
