What is the Intercontinental Championship?
The Intercontinental Championship is a professional wrestling championship that has been contested in WWE since 1979. The championship was introduced as part of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and was originally defended on the international touring circuits. The title became exclusive to the WWF’s flagship show. WrestleMania, in 1987 and was renamed the Intercontinental Championship.

The History of the championship
There is no question that the Intercontinental Championship has had a long and storied history in the world of professional wrestling. Starting in 1971, the title was originally known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) Intercontinental Championship. Over the years, the title has been won by some of the biggest names in wrestling. Including Bruno Sammartino, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, and The Undertaker.
However, in recent years, it has become one of WWE’s secondary championships. This is likely due to the fact that there are now more prestigious titles on offer, such as the World Heavyweight Championship and the United States Championship. Nevertheless, there are still some big names who have held the Intercontinental Championship over the years including Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Shawn Michaels.
The Intercontinental Championship has always been a very important title in terms of prestige and recognition. It is one of WWE’s original “big four” championships – alongside the World Heavyweight Championship, the WWE Championship, and the WWE Universal Championship. Therefore, it is always a major event when one of its holders is finally able to reach championship-level status. For example, when The Rock became champion in 2003.
