This Saturday, World Wrestling Entertainment’s biggest event of the year, SummerSlam, will take place at Ford Field, where the NFL’s Detroit Lions play. SummerSlam is the second-biggest show WWE puts on in a given year after WrestleMania, and this year’s card is usually good from top to bottom.
Brock Lesnar, who has been the main event at the last nine SummerSlams, will face Cody Rhodes in a match that will likely end their trilogy. Logan Paul will face Ricochet again after a series of viral moments between the two, and Roman Reigns will continue to fight with his own family by putting his Undisputed Universal Championship and the title of ‘Tribal Chief’ on the line against his cousin Jey Uso.
Here’s all the information you need about SummerSlam 2023:
Cody Rhodes is on ‘Today’
Cody Rhodes was a guest on NBC’s morning talk show “Today” on Thursday. He promoted his documentary “American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes” and talked up his SummerSlam fight against Brock Lesnar.

“In the world of sports entertainment and pro wrestling, the suspension of disbelief you’ve got to be the thing that’s real,” Rhodes said of the development of the documentary. “You have to be as vulnerable as possible.”
Rhodes told a story from the beginning of their feud after he said that this match with Lesnar will end their 1-1 tie.
“I was concerned the first time I stood across from Brock that he might be a little bit taller than me … and I don’t want to be dwarfed,” Rhodes said “So I started cheating a little toward the camera and I realized we might be the same height actually — the problem is, he’s triple my width.
“That’s the actual issue — he’s just a giant, giant man.”

Roman Reigns will appear on ESPN’s “First Take.”
On Tuesday morning, Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman showed up with Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim. Both Reigns and Heyman pushed the idea that the Undisputed Universal Champion is the biggest draw in sports entertainment at the box office.
Reigns, a former defensive lineman for Georgia Tech, switched from WWE to the NFL and gave his list of the top 5 teams that could win the Super Bowl. Reigns said that the 49ers were the best team, then the Chiefs, Eagles, Bengals, and Bills.

“go-home” at WWE SummerSlam Friday, August 4, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox from the Nutter Centre in Dayton, Ohio, there will be a SmackDown show.
LA Knight and Sheamus, the only two wrestlers signed to Smackdown who will be in the SummerSlam battle royal, will have a singles match 24 hours before the battle royal. The three women in the WWE Women’s Championship, Asuka, Bianca Belair, and Charlotte Flair, have been pushed as being on the show.
• Asuka, Bianca Belair, and Charlotte Flair make an appearance. • LA Knight takes on Sheamus.
WWE SummerSlam ‘go-home’ scores on Monday Night Raw
• To start the show, Logan Paul insulted the crowd in Houston and promised to beat Ricochet in “the most viral match in WWE history.” Ricochet stopped them, and they both seemed to respect each other as athletes. Paul brought up the real-life relationship between Ricochet and ring announcer Samantha Irvin as he tried to leave. He said he hoped there wouldn’t be any bad feelings “when your girl announces that Logan Paul won.” After a short fight, Paul knocked Ricochet out with a left hand.
• Gunther did a backstage promo in which he scolded his Imperium goons Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci for not stopping his match with Drew McIntyre from happening. Kaiser got back in good standing with the Ring General when he pinned Matt Riddle in 11:06.
• A medley of clips set to David Kushner’s “Daylight” played, which talked about the fight between Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar and set up their fight later that night.
Maxxine Dupri made her start in singles and pinned Valhalla in 3:45, even though the Viking Raiders were getting in the way.
• At the top of the 9 p.m. ET hour, the Judgement Day was in the ring. Priest talked about the group’s recent victims (Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins, and Liv Morgan) and promised more violence if Zayn and Rollins don’t show up for their tag team fight. Bálor kept telling Rollins that the injury he got at SummerSlam 2016 had ruined his career. Rhea Ripley tried to make an ad about Raquel Rodriguez, but Rodriguez cut her off. This started a fight at ringside. Ripley went for Rodriguez’s hurt knee, but the officials and agents stopped them.
• Part 1 of a package of interviews and highlights about Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler’s past showed Baszler continuing to say that Rousey is a self-centered friend who put her down. It was said that their match on Saturday will follow MMA rules.
Shinsuke Nakamura stopped Tommaso Ciampa in 8:50 by grabbing Ciampa’s trunks while he was doing a roll-up. This kept their rivalry going. Saturday’s SummerSlam fight royal looks like it will be between both of them.
Brock Lesnar came to the ring and said that he was just getting paid to fight Cody Rhodes on Saturday. He then asked Rhodes to come out and shake his hand. After Rhodes did what Lesnar asked, Lesnar got up to leave. Rhodes tried to jump Lesnar, just like Lesnar had done three times in the last month, but Lesnar beat Rhodes and left him on the ground.
In 7:25, Gunther pinned Chad Gable. Gable made it through the first five minutes of the match without being pinned or giving up, but the Intercontinental Champion wanted the match to start over. After the match, Gunther did a speech in which he promised to beat Drew McIntyre on Saturday.
• The second part of the Baszler-Rousey conversation was shown, and both men told their sides of the story. Baszler said of Rousey, “I’m going to take her name.”
Becky Lynch challenged Trish Stratus to a championship match. Trish Stratus tried to get out of the match, but WWE official Adam Pearce made the match legal right then and there. Lynch won the match in just five seconds. This was because Zoey Stark got in the way, which made Pearce make the match for the Raw show in Winnipeg on August 14.
• The second part of the interview with Baszler and Rousey showed, and both men told their sides of the story. Baszler said of Rousey, “I’m going to take her name.”
• Damian Priest and Dominik Mysterio were beaten by Seth Rollins and Sami Zayn in 12:18. Rollins pinned Priest with a heel stomp, which gave Seth and Sami the win. Priest looked like he had the world champion Rollins beat and went to cash in his Money in the Bank contract. However, Rollins’ former opponent at SummerSlam, Finn Bálor, took too long to give Priest the case, which gave Rollins time to get back up and win with a stomp.
Storylines for the Logan Paul vs. Ricochet match at WWE SummerSlam
In January’s Royal Rumble match, these two wrestlers met for the first time. They did an amazing spot where they both springboarded halfway across the ring and clotheslined each other in the air.
Then, at the Money in the Bank ladder match last month, they tried another high spot that didn’t go as well. Ricochet tried a Spanish Fly from the top rope, but Paul was put through two tables. Since then, they’ve been fighting back and forth on social media and in an in-ring scene that led up to the SummerSlam blow-off.
Shayna Baszler vs. Ronda Rousey
Baszler was the one who got Rousey into professional wrestling in the first place. During a women’s tag team title defence at Money in the Bank, she turned on her longtime friend, which cost them the belts. When Rousey asked for an explanation two days later on Monday Night Raw, Baszler gave a fiery promo in which she (rightly) pointed out that Rousey has had championship chances handed to her since she joined the WWE, while Baszler has had to work for every spot she’s ever had. This fight has felt a bit rushed, which is probably because Rousey is said to have a “hard out” date from the company.
Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar
Cody Rhodes was going to team up with Brock Lesnar to face Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa on Raw less than 24 hours after failing to take the undisputed Universal title from Reigns at WrestleMania. Reigns and Solo Sikoa would be there with Reigns. Before that match started, Lesnar struck Rhodes and beat him up for almost 10 minutes, until the show ended. The next month, Rhodes won by a close margin at Backlash, and on the May 22 episode of Raw, Lesnar broke Cody’s left arm during an attack. Five days later, Lesnar won by technical submission after most of the fight was spent working on Rhodes’ arm. Since then, Rhodes has been trying for weeks to get a third match. He finally got it on the July 17 episode of Raw, when Lesnar agreed to it and beat Cody in front of his family.
Gunther (c) vs. Drew McIntyre for the Intercontinental Championship
Gunther defended the Intercontinental title against McIntyre and Sheamus in one of the best matches of the weekend at WrestleMania. After Gunther won another defence against Matt Riddle at Money in the Bank, McIntyre, who hadn’t been seen on TV since that WrestleMania match, came back to face him. On the July 24 episode of Raw, Gunther took McIntyre up on his dare.
Asuka (c) vs. Bianca for the Women’s Championship Charlotte Flair takes on Belair
Asuka tried to take the title from Belair at WrestleMania, but she didn’t succeed. On May 27, however, she won the title at Night of Champions by using the blue mist in a clever way. On the June 9 episode of Smackdown, Flair came back for the first time since WrestleMania to face Asuka. This made Belair mad because she was supposed to get a rematch with Flair. On June 30, Flair and Asuka fought for the title. Belair got in the way and knocked both of them out. A triple threat was set up for SummerSlam to solve the problem.
Seth Rollins (c) vs. Finn Balor for the World Heavyweight Title
In the end of a tournament, Bálor Rollins beat AJ Styles to win the new World Heavyweight Championship. Soon after that, Bálor started to follow Rollins around and ask for a title match. At SummerSlam 2016, Bálor beat Rollins to become the first person to win the Universal Championship. However, he had to give up the title the next night on Raw because of an injury he got during the match. In the promos for this match, Bálor has kept bringing up that story as the reason why he wants to face Rollins at this year’s SummerSlam.
Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jey Uso for the Undisputed Universal Title
At this point, the Bloodline story has been going on for more than three years and has never been better. It’s about members of the real-life Anoa’i wrestling family. Since his cousins lost the tag-team titles at WrestleMania, Reigns has been mean to them. On the June 16 episode of SmackDown, the Usos turned on the “Tribal Chief” because of this. Jey was the first person in almost three years to pin Reigns in a tag-team match at Money in the Bank. He won the match and set up a one-on-one match for the undisputed Universal Championship at SummerSlam.
