What Is The United States Championship?
WWE United States Championship is one of the most prestigious championships in professional wrestling. The WWE US Championship is a world title in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) professional wrestling promotion. It is traditionally contested in professional wrestling matches, in which participants execute scripted actions “staged” largely for the benefit of spectators.
History of the WWE United States Championship
The championship was initially formed in 1975 by the National Wrestling Alliance and is currently defended in WWE. For the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF, now WWE) from 1963 until 1976.
The United States Championship is the oldest active professional wrestling championship in the United States. The title was first established on May 26, 1923. When Fred Kohler and Lou Thesz fought to a draw for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in Omaha, Nebraska. Kohler then held the title until he was stripped of the title in 1928. It wasn’t until 1933 that the title was reinstated and held by Jack Curley until it was vacated in 1951.
In 1953, Buddy Rogers won the title from Jerry Lawler in Memphis, Tennessee. Rogers held the championship for four years before losing it to Pedro Morales at Madison Square Garden. Morales would hold the championship for two years before losing it to Bruno Sammartino at Shea Stadium in June of 1958. After Sammartino lost the title to Dick Murdoch. It went through several different hands before Don Muraco finally became champion in February 1970. Muraco would hold the championship for three years before losing it to Bob Backlund at Madison Square Garden. Backlund would hold the championship for six months before losing it to King Harley Race at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. The race would hold the championship for two years before losing it to Hulk.

It is one of two secondary championships for WWE’s main roster and the Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown. Theory is the current champion in his first reign. Austin White is currently signed to WWE. He performs on the Raw brand under the ring name All Day Theory. Theory is the current WWE United States Champion in his first reign. He won the title by defeating the previous champion Finn Bálor on April 18, 2022, episode of Raw in Buffalo, New York.
