Colorado Football Team Faces Multiple Controversies Amid Shilo Sanders’ Bankruptcy Saga
Colorado and Coach Prime, Deion Sanders, find themselves once again under the harsh glare of controversy. Since mid-April, the team has been navigating through a storm of negative publicity, with issues stemming from the transfer portal. Adding fuel to the fire are the recent reports from May 25, which have resurfaced claims of Shilo Sanders’ bankruptcy, allegedly filed to dodge a staggering $11.8 million fine linked to his 2016 assault and battery case involving high school security guard John Darjean.
The media frenzy around these issues has been relentless, with headlines constantly updating on the evolving drama. However, the situation took a darker turn with the emergence of a new video that seems to implicate several current and former Colorado players in gambling activities at the Champions Center.
On May 26, Broncos Insider Benjamin Allbright broke the news with a report captioned, “Colorado football players allegedly shown gambling in newly surfaced 2023 video.” The report features a clip shared by college football fan Tim Scheld on X, which purportedly shows multiple players engaged in a dice game on the floor and pool tables within the team facility. Sports Illustrated added details, stating, “A man appearing to be Cormani McClain is seen with another man in the act while at least eight others are gathered around with large sums of money being displayed.” The video, marked by elements such as gray practice jerseys, suggests it was filmed shortly before the start of the 2023 season.

In response to the video, Scheld’s caption sarcastically criticized Coach Prime and Athletic Director Rick George, saying, “Got this from a CU player source… Way to go Deion Sanders (and) Rick George. Must be the NIL.” He further mocked Shilo Sanders, referencing his recent bankruptcy claim with the line, “Maybe Shilo Sanders can borrow $$$ from his teammates to settle up the bankruptcy.”
As for Shilo Sanders, the bankruptcy claim has undoubtedly added another layer of complexity to his and his family’s public image. His father, Deion Sanders, and his ex-wife Pilar have remained silent since the news broke. However, Shilo’s half-brother, Deion Jr., expressed support through a heartfelt message on his Well Off Forever Instagram page. On May 25, Deion Jr. posted a picture depicting stick figures labeled ‘car payment,’ ‘rent,’ ‘gas,’ and ‘lights’ beating up a stick figure labeled ‘me,’ subtly referencing Shilo’s predicament. He captioned it, “Don’t get discouraged in those summer months… it’s slow for everybody. It’s not just you.”
This supportive gesture raises questions about how Shilo, once described by his father as “very conservative” with money, found himself bankrupt within two weeks. The mystery remains unsolved, but Shilo’s attorney has provided some insight. The attorney emphasized that the substantial judgment against Shilo, coupled with his status as an undergraduate student planning to pursue graduate programs, could severely impact his future. To avoid lifelong collection efforts from the plaintiff, Shilo filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, seeking relief from his debts and a chance to rebuild his financial standing.
As the Colorado football program reels from these controversies, the spotlight on Deion Sanders and his team intensifies. The gambling allegations have prompted calls for an internal investigation, and the team’s public relations battle continues to escalate. Meanwhile, the broader college football community watches closely, awaiting the next development in this unfolding saga.
