Gabrielle Union, celebrated actress and now a burgeoning producer, has recently been at the center of attention in New York City, where she attended the premiere of “The Idea of You.” This film, adapted from the 2017 novel that rose to fame during the pandemic, holds a special place in Union’s heart, as she was among the first to recognize its potential.
In an intimate conversation with ET, Union shared her emotional response to the manuscript’s final draft. “We got to read every draft and by the final manuscript that was about to be turned into her editor, I read it, and I broke down,” Union recalled. This manuscript wasn’t just any book for Union; it was penned by a close friend whom she met on the set of “Deliver Us From Eva” in 2003. Union and the author, who played sisters in the film, forged a bond that has lasted nearly two decades. “We’ve been like sisters ever since,” Union stated, highlighting the depth of their relationship.
Union’s involvement with the film began when she was moved by the story’s narrative, which intertwines the romance between a divorced mom and a younger British boy band member. The themes of the novel mirrored aspects of Union’s own life, particularly reflecting her love for boy bands and mirroring the age gap she shares with her husband, Miami Heat champion Dwyane Wade.
“I got to read an early manuscript and fell in love,” Union expressed, recalling the moment the idea to produce the film sparked. Seeing the potential for a broader audience, she didn’t hesitate to extend an offer to produce the film, well before it became a public sensation.
The poignant love story drew her in further because it resonated with her personal life, particularly her marriage to Wade. Sharing the book with him, Union found that it also struck a chord with her husband, albeit for different reasons. “I slid it to my husband and he loved it, but for different reasons, and I was like this is the movie,” she explained, emphasizing how the narrative spoke to both of them in unique ways.
Union’s excitement was palpable when discussing the casting of Anne Hathaway as the lead actress. The two stars were photographed together at the screening, their rapport evident and adding to the film’s allure. Union’s involvement in every step, from script reading to casting, underlines her commitment not only to the project’s success but also to ensuring the story’s integrity and emotional depth were preserved.
“The Idea of You” is set to captivate audiences worldwide as it debuts on various OTT platforms starting May 2. Union’s foray into production marks a significant step in her career, driven by a genuine connection to the story and its characters.
