Former NFL cornerback Malcolm Butler found himself in legal trouble earlier this month when he was arrested for drunk driving in Rhode Island, according to police reports.
The incident occurred on March 16, as detailed by a police report obtained by CBS News. Butler was spotted by a patrolman in his white Mercedes Benz, which was stopped and blocking traffic at 3 a.m. Butler informed the officer that he was coming from a studio in Providence. However, the patrolman noticed signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol on Butler’s breath, profuse sweating, severely bloodshot and watery eyes, and slurred speech.
Reportedly, when questioned about his alcohol consumption, Butler allegedly responded with, “Just take me to jail.” He refused to undergo field sobriety tests and declined a breathalyzer test at the police station. Consequently, he was arrested for drunk driving, and his car was towed. Butler was then issued a summons to appear in court on March 28 to face the charges.

Butler’s attorney, John Harwood, filed a motion to dismiss or suppress the charge, alleging violations of Butler’s constitutional rights under the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and 14th Amendments. Harwood argued that Butler was not driving at the time of the stop, implying that he was being responsible by not driving while intoxicated.
During his NFL career, Butler played seven seasons, spending four of those with the New England Patriots, where he won two Super Bowl titles. He gained prominence for his game-winning interception in Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks. However, Butler recently announced his retirement from professional football earlier this month.
