Former WWE star Peyton Royce recently shared insights into the formation of The IIconics, the popular tag team she formed with Billie Kay. Their journey from “WWE NXT” to “WWE SmackDown” was marked by creative challenges and memorable moments that endeared them to wrestling fans worldwide.
From Iconic Duo to The IIconics
When Royce and Kay debuted in “WWE NXT” in 2015, they were known as the “Iconic Duo.” However, this name could not be trademarked, prompting WWE to request a new moniker for their transition to the main roster on “WWE SmackDown.” On a recent appearance with “Ring the Belle,” Royce explained the evolution of their name.
“I think it couldn’t be trademarked because it was just a regular phrase, so they’re like you’ve got to come up with something new,” Royce said. Despite the directive to create a completely different identity, Royce and Kay were determined to retain the essence of what they had built. “We were going to come up with something completely different away from that, and then we’re like no, this is who we are and this is what we’ve put all our work and energy into creating the Iconic Duo, so let’s try and make it work. That’s where The IIconics came from.”
The Magic of Backstage Segments
Royce also reminisced about The IIconics’ beloved backstage segments, where they conducted comedic interviews with various WWE stars. These segments showcased their chemistry and humor, quickly becoming fan favorites. Royce credited Kay’s comedic talent for the success of these bits.
“I knew that like Jess [Kay] was going to make me laugh, and I think that’s what people love, watching those videos ’cause Jess is hilarious,” Royce noted. “They just kind of worked, but it didn’t really matter who we were with because it was a different dynamic, and that’s what was fun for us.”
Personal Milestones and Return to Wrestling
In addition to her professional achievements, Royce reached significant personal milestones. She gave birth to her first child in January 2023 and made her return to the ring in October of the same year. Competing in World Series Wrestling (WSW) in Australia, Royce captured the WSW Women’s Championship, marking a triumphant comeback.
Legacy of The IIconics
The IIconics left an indelible mark on WWE with their unique blend of charisma, humor, and in-ring prowess. Their journey from the “Iconic Duo” in NXT to The IIconics on the main roster is a testament to their determination and creativity. Royce’s reflections on this journey highlight the challenges and triumphs they faced, solidifying their legacy in the wrestling world.
