As told by Grant Wactor, Johnny narrated that on that fateful night, three men were trying to steal the catalytic converter from Johnny’s car after Johnny had taken his shift at a local bar. Wactor, a real life hero, did not try to fight off the thieves but instead protected his female co-worker by standing in front of her and using his body as a shield from the bullets. This is because, the discovery of Johnny’s heroism in the face of danger has only made the events that followed the tragedy even more sad. Grant Wactor, visibly shaken, spoke about the gun violence and the need to confront the “cowards” who use guns to kill. These are the sentiments of many people who are struggling to find meaning in Wactor’s death, and the issue of gun violence in the community.
Following Wactor’s death, his agent David Shaul released a touching statement on the actor’s behalf. Reflecting on Wactor, Shaul stated that he is a ‘spectacular human being’ and not only a great actor, but also a man with a great character. Wactor was a workaholic, who was passionate about what he did, he was always ready to go the extra mile and he had a big heart especially to those in need. It was a pleasure for Shaul to have worked with Wactor for more than a decade and noted that he left a good impression with everyone he met.
The exit of Wactor from General Hospital in 2022 was a big blow as it put an end to a significant chapter of the show and there is no doubt that his shoes will be very hard to fill.
