The Dallas Mavericks are now just one game away from making it to their first NBA Finals since 2011. Battling a nightmare first-half deficit, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving rescued Dallas yet again combining for 66 points in the thrilling Game 3 win against Anthony Edwards’ Timberwolves. They stand on a favorable pedestal that’s directed toward the final battle to claim a championship. However, the joy of a tough win also came with the agonizing loss of a vital comrade.
Lively’s Impact on the Court:
During the first half, Dereck Lively II was enjoying himself. He has accumulated 6 points and 3 rebounds off the bench. The rookie was playing with vigor and unmatched energy that severely troubled Minnesota. Sadly, during the same quarter, Lively met with an unfortunate accident. As he toppled to the ground, Karl-Anthony Town’s knee drove into the back of his head.
The Scare and Diagnosis:
He stayed down for a few moments and was later ushered to the locker room for further evaluation. The backup center didn’t participate in the contest any further. It was diagnosed as a neck sprain. Hours after the immediate evaluation, Adrian Wojnarowski provided an update on the 20-year-old’s availability for Game 4.
The Uncertain Road Ahead:
“Tests returned OK on Dereck Lively II’s neck but his availability for Game 4 remains unclear, source tells ESPN,” he disclosed on X. Luckily, Lively has suffered no major injury. However, it has cast doubt on his participation during the postseason. Lively has been critical to the Mavericks’ triumphs this season.

The Mavericks’ Dilemma:
Lively was an important part of the Dallas rotation, especially in the postseason. The rookie center is dynamic and proactive when battling for rebounds. During the regular season, he averaged 2,5 offensive rebounds per game, critical toward the Mavericks’ resilience and toughness as a team. Not only did he provide additional possessions, but Lively’s efficient 74.7% shooting percentage provided the Mavericks with a competent inside scorer.
Finding a Substitute:
This only leaves Dwight Powell, a traditional and passive center who can play some crucial minutes for the team. Taking Dereck Lively II’s place today, Powell played eight minutes and added 2 points and 2 rebounds. He isn’t a gifted scorer or a tireless rebounder like the rookie, however, the long-time Mavericks servant is a veteran in such situations. Kidd will use his ability to trouble the Wolves’ defense and disrupt their schemes.
Looking Ahead:
The zealous center plays the game with passion and tremendous vigor. He was having a memorable playoff series against the Timberwolves. Lively has averaged nearly 10 points in the three games. Interestingly enough, he has yet to miss a shot in any of those contests. Additionally, his size and brute strength make him an interior disruptor, a solid presence to have when Daniel Gafford is off the floor.
Do you think the Mavericks can live without the fervor of Lively? As Dallas braces for Game 4, uncertainty looms large over the team’s lineup. Yet, with the resilience displayed throughout the season, there’s a glimmer of hope among fans. As they say, in the face of adversity, champions are made.
