The wrestling world has been buzzing with free agency news involving WWE superstars throughout the first half of 2024. While some big names like Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, and Damian Priest have signed new long-term deals with WWE, others are exploring new opportunities. Among the potential movers is Ricochet, who has already parted ways with WWE after his contract expired, with AEW likely to express interest. Additionally, Dijak recently revealed that WWE will let his contract expire, citing a frustrating negotiation process.
One more notable name on the potential free agent list is Natalya, a veteran wrestler with WWE since 2008. Natalya holds the record for the most wins by a woman in WWE history, among other accolades. Her recent activity on social media, including the removal of WWE references from her Twitter/X bio, has fueled speculation about her possible departure as her contract reportedly nears its end.
Mercedes Mone, formerly known as Sasha Banks in WWE, has her sights set on Natalya. Mone, who spent seven years on WWE’s main roster with Natalya, spoke highly of her in a recent interview with Maggie and Perloff. Although Mone did not directly name Natalya, she hinted at her interest in bringing Natalya and her husband, TJ Wilson (aka Tyson Kidd), to AEW. Wilson has been a top producer for WWE women’s matches for nearly a decade, and Mone has collaborated with him on numerous memorable matches.
In the interview, Mone expressed her desire to welcome top talent to AEW: “I would choose other rumored girls that I’ve heard that might be on the free agent list. So I think there’s a lot out there. So I would say the more, the merrier, as long as you’re good. As long as you’re one of the best wrestlers in the world. Come over here because this is where the best wrestle.”
Mone further teased the potential signing: “I have heard little rumors of a certain girl that I really, really love. I don’t want to name names because if I say their name, then the other competition might just want to get them that much quicker. So, if we have a chance to get her, I would absolutely love her and her husband to be here. But that’s just that… Just go on X, Twitter, or Instagram. I’m sure the fans will figure it out.”
In addition to the free agency buzz, Mercedes Mone is preparing for a significant match at the AEW-NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view on June 30th. Mone, the current TBS Champion, will face CMLL’s Stephanie Vaquer in a high-stakes match for both the TBS Championship and the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship held by Vaquer. With Mone undefeated in singles matches in AEW, many fans consider her the favorite to walk away with both titles.
