The Dallas Cowboys are under observation as they go through the summer trying to find the pieces that will allow them to make a postseason run. Their strategy, which focuses more on what they haven’t done than what they have accomplished, has drawn criticism, nevertheless.
ESPN reports that a director of scouting from another NFL team, who wishes to remain unnamed, expressed uncertainty about Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ approach, citing in particular the organization’s strong dependence on the 2018 draft class to solve critical problems.
“I don’t really understand the plan there so far this offseason, but there’s a lot weighing on this draft, and they seem to be confident about finding a bunch of starters,” the scouting director told ESPN.
Jones and his group seem to be relying on the draft to take care of these requirements in response. According to ESPN, improving the offensive line would be a top goal. Inside linemen like Jackson Powers-Johnson and Graham Barton from Duke are possible early picks. This tactic might enable current player Tyler Smith to transition to left tackle.
The Cowboys might not stop there, though. Rumor has it that they may decide to take two early-draft picks in order to double down on offensive lineman. Dominick Puni of Kansas and Cooper Beebe of Kansas State are mentioned as Day 2 alternatives that might make an impact right away.
The Cowboys have the draft capital to carry out their plan with the No. 24 overall pick and two more selections in the top 100. However, their past draft performance hasn’t produced the expected outcomes, which increases the pressure to make the proper choices this year.
