Gail O’Neill, a revered figure in both the fashion and journalism industries, passed away on October 10 at the age of 61. O’Neill’s multifaceted career began in an unexpected place: aboard an airplane in 1985, where a meeting with photographer Chuck Barry set her on a path from a Xerox marketing representative to an international modeling sensation.
Renowned for her grace and intellect, O’Neill quickly became a familiar face on the covers of Vogue, Mademoiselle, Elle, and Glamour. Despite her success in fashion, her ambitions extended beyond modeling. Driven by a passion for storytelling and social impact, O’Neill transitioned into broadcast journalism, where she continued to influence and inspire.
During her illustrious journalism career, O’Neill contributed significantly to major networks such as CBS, CNN, and HGTV. More recently, she dedicated herself to covering arts and culture for ArtsAtl, a nonprofit organization based in Atlanta. Her reporting was marked by depth, compassion, and a commitment to shedding light on underreported stories.

“Gail was a brilliant beacon of intelligence and grace in both the fashion and journalism sectors. She brought profound depth to her reporting, elevating arts and culture to new heights,” said Alex Thompson, a former colleague at CNN.
As a pioneer for African-American models and an advocate for social justice, O’Neill’s influence extended well beyond her public personas. She was a vocal supporter of the Black Girls Coalition and famously declined a cigarette campaign that involved South African investors during the apartheid era. These actions exemplified her dedication to ethical principles and social causes.
Gabrielle Union recently paid tribute to O’Neill, describing her as “the sweetest icon ever” and highlighting her role as a trailblazer for Black women in fashion. Union shared an image of O’Neill’s famous Elle cover on her Instagram story, a nod to her groundbreaking impact.

O’Neill’s agent, Stephanie Grill, also remarked on her trailblazing role. “Gail did it all and at a time when it was difficult to get Black girls on anything. Her legacy as a trailblazer will forever be remembered,” Grill stated.
Despite achieving great success, O’Neill battled a serious illness for two years before her passing. She leaves behind her husband, Paul Viera, her mother, Elaine, and her siblings, Randy and Denise. The family, along with countless fans and admirers, mourns the loss of a truly remarkable woman.
