In the ever-changing world of professional wrestling, the flurry of contracts and new projects often surprises fans and insiders alike. One such development was the launch of Marigold, a new boxing promotion started by the deposed founder of World Wonder Ring STARDOM, Rossi Ogawa. Accusations of talent scouting led to Ogawa leaving STARDOM earlier this year. However, it appears that significant pressure from WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque played a key role in this new chapter of Ogawa’s career.
In a revealing interview with “Sports Graphic Number,” Ogawa opened up about the encouragement he received from Triple H during an online meeting in December 2023. “Triple H told me, ‘I want to help you with whatever you want to do, whether it’s with STARDOM or as a solo artist,'” Ogawa shared. “He gave me the push I needed.”
At the time of this conversation, Ogawa was still serving as STARDOM’s executive producer. However, he had been contemplating a new venture since the spring of 2023, fueled by what he described as “voices asking for it.” This sentiment aligns with the accusations of talent poaching from Bushiroad, the parent company of STARDOM, particularly highlighted by Marigold’s signing of former World of STARDOM Champion Giulia.
Giulia, a marquee name in the wrestling world, departed STARDOM at the end of March 2024. Her move to Marigold has been a focal point of speculation and controversy. Reports suggest that Giulia is expected to join the “WWE NXT” roster later this year, although her debut hinges on her recovery from a wrist injury sustained during a Marigold show. Her transition to WWE will only proceed once she has fulfilled her obligations with Ogawa’s new venture.
The relationship between Marigold and WWE appears to be friendly and cooperative, as evidenced by Ogawa’s presence alongside William Regal at “WWE NXT” Stand & Deliver in April. This connection underscores a broader strategy, potentially benefiting both promotions. Ogawa’s collaboration with Triple H and the visible support from WWE hint at a mutually advantageous relationship that could shape the future of wrestling talent exchanges and promotion alliances.
Ogawa’s legacy in professional wrestling is significant. He founded STARDOM in 2010 alongside All Japan Women’s veteran Nanae Takahashi and former pro wrestler and mixed martial artist Fuka Kakimoto. Under his guidance, STARDOM became a powerhouse in women’s wrestling, producing numerous top-tier talents. In October 2019, Bushiroad acquired STARDOM, integrating it as a sister brand to NJPW and expanding its reach and influence in the wrestling world.
Despite his ousting from STARDOM, Ogawa’s passion and vision for wrestling remain undiminished. His establishment of Marigold is a testament to his resilience and commitment to fostering new talent and creating compelling wrestling narratives. With the backing of influential figures like Triple H, Marigold is poised to make a significant impact in the wrestling industry.
