In the aftermath of AEW’s Double or Nothing event, where numerous titles were fiercely contested, AEW President Tony Khan has hinted at the possibility of adding yet another championship to the roster. Despite the already extensive list of titles, Khan sees potential in introducing a mixed tag team championship to the promotion.
Current AEW Champions and Notable Matches
Double or Nothing featured several title matches, marking significant moments for the company:
- Mercedes Mone captured the TBS Championship from Willow Nightingale, earning her first AEW title.
- Will Ospreay emerged victorious over Roderick Strong to claim the AEW International Championship.
- Toni Storm successfully defended her AEW Women’s World Championship against Serena Deeb.
- Swerve Strickland retained the AEW World Championship against Christian Cage, despite interference from The Patriarchy.
AEW currently boasts nine active titles, excluding the ROH and NJPW championships regularly defended within the company. This roster includes the non-sanctioned FTW Title, held by Chris Jericho.
Tony Khan’s Vision for AEW Titles
During the post-show media scrum, Khan addressed the potential expansion of AEW’s title repertoire, specifically focusing on the women’s division and mixed tag team titles. He reflected on the depth of the women’s roster at its peak and expressed his commitment to rebuilding it:
“We’ve talked a lot about potential additions in terms of championships. Right now, we have strong rivalries emerging. We’re still trying to build the depth back to the strongest it’s ever been. There was a point, All Out 2021, where I was coaching the Casino Battle Royal and we had 21 women in that battle royale and a great Britt Baker vs. Kris Statlander championship match. That was, top to bottom, up until now, the deepest the division has ever been. A lot of great people in that match have been out or injured. We’re going to keep getting depth back and getting the division stronger. Those are interesting championships.”
Khan then turned his attention to the concept of mixed tag team championships:
“I also think something different we could do here, that I have interest in, would be mixed tag team championships. I think a lot of people would be interested in that too. That’s different than what other major promotions have, and I think it would set AEW apart. I’m interested in mixed tag team championships.”
Mixed Tag Team Championships: A Unique Addition
Mixed tag team matches have been a staple in various wrestling promotions, but a dedicated championship for mixed teams is relatively rare. Mexican promotion AAA has a World Mixed Tag Team Championship, which AEW stars Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo held in 2022.
Introducing a mixed tag team championship could offer a fresh dynamic and differentiate AEW from other major promotions. It would provide a platform for both male and female wrestlers to showcase their talents together, fostering unique storylines and rivalries.
