The Los Angeles Rams have made a significant move by agreeing to terms with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on a one-year deal, as reported by NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo and NFL Network’s Peter Schrager on Friday, citing sources.
Garoppolo’s journey to Los Angeles follows a challenging 2023 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he aimed to prove his value as a starting quarterback. However, his tenure with the Raiders was short-lived, lasting just eight weeks as the team’s starter before he was replaced.
Despite signing a lucrative three-year deal with the Raiders and reuniting with former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Garoppolo’s performance fell short of expectations. He completed six starts, accumulating 1,205 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions, with a passer rating of 77.7. His season was further disrupted by injuries and a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
Now, Garoppolo returns to the NFC West, where he previously played for the San Francisco 49ers for six seasons. During his time with the 49ers, he achieved significant success, including leading the team to a Super Bowl appearance in LIV.
In Los Angeles, Garoppolo will serve as the backup to starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, providing valuable experience and depth to the Rams’ roster. The Rams have prioritized experienced backups in recent seasons due to Stafford’s injury concerns, previously employing quarterbacks like Carson Wentz and Baker Mayfield in similar roles.
Garoppolo’s extensive NFL experience spanning over a decade includes 15,494 passing yards, 94 touchdowns, and 51 interceptions, boasting a commendable 43-20 record as a starter.
