Dallas Cowboys fans were left eagerly anticipating a busy free agency period after owner Jerry Jones hinted at an “all-in” approach. However, the team’s actions thus far have failed to match the excitement.
Since the start of the new league year, the Cowboys have made minimal moves in free agency. While they re-signed a few players, such as cornerback Jourdan Lewis, and added veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks, their overall activity has been subdued. Even star running back Derrick Henry revealed that the Cowboys didn’t reach out to him, leaving fans puzzled and frustrated.
Speaking at a promotional event, Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones acknowledged the fans’ frustrations, particularly given the lack of success in recent playoff appearances. He emphasized that criticism is expected until the team achieves championship success. However, Jones stressed that their definition of being “all in” extends beyond spending in free agency to maintaining the core team.
The Cowboys have faced challenges in free agency, notably with Dak Prescott’s pending contract extension and limited cap space. Additionally, the team prioritizes re-signing its own talent, including key players like CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons. This focus on retaining homegrown talent reflects the organization’s confidence in its drafting and development processes.
Despite the quiet start to free agency, Jones remains optimistic about the team’s direction. He views the success of their drafted players as a positive sign and emphasizes that player acquisition is a year-round endeavor, not confined to the early days of free agency.
